Location

Sigiriya is located in Northern Matale District in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The nearest city to Sigiriya Fortress is Dambulla, another city in Sri Lanka with an ancient value. Fortress is 1144 feet high above sea level. The rock is surrounded by an equally beautiful view with pleasant greenery of a forest. History of the Fortress

According to canonical writings, the area around the rock had been inhabited by a Buddhist monastery even before King Kashyapa 1 built the Fortress as a shield to political threats of his own brother, Moggallana. Even though this was meant to be a fortress, it served simultaneously as a beautiful palace as well. Once King Kashyapa failed in his attempts to fortify his power and the palace, the Sigiriya Fortress became a world famous tourist destination in Sri Lanka. It is said that ‘Sigirya’ got its name as a result of the nature of the entrance to the fortress which is in the shape of the mouth of a lion.


Wonders of the Sigiriya Fortress

It has been widely acknowledged that the construction strategies used in the process of building Sigiriya Fortress is a secret even up to date. There is a garden on the top of the rock which consists of all the components which we can see in modern architectural designs, including water pools. Moreover, what Sigirya has been most famous for is Sigiriya frescoes which are considered to be secondary in mastery only to Ajanta frescoes in India.
