History of Beira Lake

Beira Lake was built by the Portuguese, as a moat, to defend themselves from Ceylonese protesters who struggled to exile the foreign invaders. Beira Lake covers 160 acres now. But, earlier, the area of Beira lake was twice of the current size. The foreign rulers took actions to maintain crocodiles as pitfalls so that the rebels do not reach the foreign rulers. However, during the British reign in Ceylon, those crocodiles were removed and the area around the Lake was renovated and developed to a extent that its former torturing reputation faded away. It was transformed to a place of happiness by including rowing and yachting activities. But these activities are not there anymore.

Beira Lake Today

Beira lake today is famous for an extension of Gangaramaya Temple; Seemamalakaya Meditation Centre. In addition, the lovers’ island is another place where the couples go and spend their time freely. Moreover, the lake is popular for swan boat rides. Swan boats? Yes. The travelers can hire a swan-shaped boat by which you can paddle across the lake. These boats are manually powered boats and it is a really nice experience to add to your travel journey. People who would love to go jogging along the paths running above the lake, there is a jogging track as well.
