Places that you should not miss if you come to Ella

1. Ella Rock- A Major Hiking Destination in Sri Lanka.

If you are a traveler who is keen on getting hiking adventures, Ella Rock is an iconic place in Sri Lanka to have that experience. Since almost all the travelers are keen hikers, we highly recommend Ella Rock as a hiking destination in Sri Lanka. We do not want to exaggerate that hiking is easy, but it is inevitably adventurous to go on a hike in Ella Rock. Ella is for all the types of hikers: those who seek extremely adventurous hiking experiences and less adventurous experiences. The path to the summit of the rock is not even and may sometimes get inundated by fog. Once you reach the top, it gets cold. On the way to the summit you can see fantabulous scenery which you SHOULD NOT miss during the hike in Ella Rock Sri Lanka. In addition, you MUST see the view of the sunrise from the peak of the Ella Rock. Vishmi Travels highly recommend getting a guide before commencing the hike because there are rail tracks on the way and the fog may mislead you from your path. Hence, getting a local guide would be an advantage.

2. Dhowa Temple

According to records, the temple has about 2000 years of history. This is situated in Dhowa village, a small village in Badulla district, Sri Lanka. The village is located surrounded by mountain ranges. The significance of this temple is that it has an unfinished statue of Lord Buddha. The statue is 39 ft (12m) high and currently in a state of decaying. Apart from the statue, there are historical paintings in the shrine room of the temple.

3. Little Adam’s Peak

If you are in the surroundings of Ella, don’t miss the opportunity to pay a visit to this place with a panoramic view. You will spend approximately two hours to reach the peak. Once reached, you may witness breathtaking views. This too is a major hiking destination in Sri Lanka. The summit is 1141m high. It is advised for the travelers to wear appropriate shoes because the higher you go the higher the steep goes. Moreover, do not risk your lives by getting so close to the edge while trying to get selfies or photos. It is true that the view is one of the most beautiful views that you are going to witness. But, safety must be a priority of the travelers.

4. Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery

If you are a Buddhist, or someone who is keen on learning Buddhism, you will get the opportunity for that at this place. It is not just a monastery to teach Buddhism but the travelers can also enjoy the scenery around and have an outstandingly beautiful view from the top.

5. Ravana Cave

There is no doubt that keen travelers must definitely have heard about Ravana King and his adventures. Ravana Cave, according to historical writings, was built by King Ravana. You should definitely go and see how insightful and thoughtful was this King Ravana because the architecture of the cave and the affiliated tunnel system is marvelous. These tunnels and cave systems had been used as a secret pathway for transportation.

6. Nine Arch Bridge

Constructed in 1921, the Nine Arch Bridge is 300 ft long and 80 ft high. This is also known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky’ and that may sum up how beautiful the outlook should be for travelers to have at this place. As well, this is an epitome of mastery of engineering technology in the construction field during the twentieth century. Travelers can reach the bridge from Gotuwala road. Since it is a rail track that runs across the bridge, be cautious to check the train time table before you go to the premises. All the travelers who come to the bridge do not forget to take beautiful pictures while sitting on the bridge.

7. Ravana Falls

Located at a distance of 6km from Ella railway station, Ravana Ella or the Ravana Falls cascades down with the beautiful echoing sound of the water falling. The reason for having the name Ravana for this waterfall is that legends state that King Ravana had kidnapped Sita from India and detained her in the caves behind the waterfall. Even today, local people firmly believe that the waterfall has an invisible influence from the soul of Ravana. In rainy seasons the waterfall gets so intimidating but it is still worth having a visit to see how beautiful the cascading of the fall is.

8. Nil Diya Pokuna (a secret underground water pool).

If you have seen blue sapphires, the color of the water in this pond is also like that. Even though seeing blue water is mesmerizing scenery, the path to the underground water tunnel is not that easy. Travelers MUST have a guide and be prepared with head torches and other necessities that may come in need to explore underground premises. If you are afraid of exploring dark places, this is not the place for you. This place too is associated with King Ravana and Sita. According to history, the area around the pool provides traces of an ancient palace where it is assumed that the king kept Sita under good care and protection.

As you can see, it is not only the beauty of these premises that attract travelers across the world. Because of the legendary history that Sri Lanka claims to possess, there is an added value to the majority of the tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Vishmi Travels us, invites all the adventure seekers there to experience this glory of Sri Lanka.
